Labial Disc Woman

Ilaria Berenice drew this portrait after watching a documentary about a tribe in Africa. Men from that tribe put plates on women’s lips to make them look ugly so that they don’t get raped by men from other tribes. She was so shocked that she had to express her feelings.

She says that violence is used to chase away violence. The woman portrayed looks far away, she looks beyond everything, to look within. Oil colors and sand are the main media used in the painting.
